How often should bathwater be analyzed?

2 min read

The quality of bathing water is crucial for the safety and well-being of bathers. Invisible microbiological risks such as Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , or Legionella spp . can cause health problems if the water quality is not regularly monitored. For this reason, the DVSV recommends clear guidelines for the annual frequency of sampling in various bathing facilities.

As a GMP-certified laboratory, Valmonas Analytik AG from Steg (Switzerland) offers the standard-compliant execution of these analyses – quickly, precisely and documented according to international standards (Ph. Eur., ISO, USP).

Recommended frequency for microbiological analyses

The recommendations differ depending on the type of pool and the intensity of use:

  • Therapeutic swimming pools: 12 samples per year

  • Swimming pools of thermal baths: 12 samples per year

  • Whirlpools in thermal baths: 12 samples per year

  • School swimming pools: 6 samples per year

  • Hotel swimming pool large (open more than 10 months/year, numerous facilities): 4 samples per year

  • Pools with numerous non-conformities in the past: 4 samples per year

  • Hotel swimming pool “Standard”: 3 samples per year

  • Whirlpool Hotel “Standard”: 3 samples per year

  • Outdoor swimming pools (summer operation): 2 samples per year

  • Sauna pool “cold water”: 1 sample per year

  • Kneipp foot baths: 1 sample per year

Legionella analyses

Since Legionella bacteria can be particularly dangerous when inhaled via aerosols (e.g., in Jacuzzis or whirlpools), a special recommendation applies here:

  • Bath water with aerosol formation (Jacuzzis, whirlpools, etc.): at least 1 sample per year

Why regular analyses are essential

Regular water analyses are not only a legal or regulatory obligation, but primarily serve the **health of bathers**. Early detection of contaminants allows for the implementation of appropriate measures and ensures uninterrupted operation. Facilities with high visitor traffic or complex water treatment systems particularly benefit from close monitoring.
