Pseudomonas & Legionella – underestimated risks in water

2 min read

Water is the basis of life – but it can also become dangerous when harmful bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Legionella pneumophila multiply in it. These germs occur naturally in the environment, especially in bodies of water and moist soil. In water systems such as drinking water pipes, showers, or swimming pools, they find ideal growth conditions and can multiply rapidly.

Danger for vulnerable individuals: Pseudomonas and Legionella can cause serious infections in people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, or those with pre-existing conditions .

  • Pseudomonas primarily causes inflammation of wounds, the respiratory tract, and the urinary tract. Pseudomonas infections are particularly problematic in hospitals , where they can cause severe outbreaks.

  • Legionella bacteria cause flu-like illnesses and severe pneumonia , which can be fatal if left untreated .

Infection and risk areas

Infection with Pseudomonas or Legionella bacteria usually occurs through direct contact with contaminated water or by inhaling water droplets containing pathogens, for example, while showering or in swimming pools. The risk of infection is particularly high in industrial plants, hospitals, and public buildings with complex water systems. Therefore, the Drinking Water Ordinance mandates regular testing for Pseudomonas and Legionella in these areas.

Prevention through hygiene measures

To prevent contamination with these bacteria, preventative measures are crucial:

  • Professional planning, execution and maintenance of the water installation

  • Regularly flushing rarely used taps and showers

  • Compliance with hot water temperatures (storage > 60°C, circulation > 55°C, draw-off > 50°C)

  • Regular testing of hot water at representative sampling points

  • Disinfection and remediation when limit values are exceeded
